Kick Ass Vlog: Lac St. Clair

Lac St. Clair is another of my all time favorite posts. From a production standpoint, it’s pretty straightforward - just a man with a camera. What makes it special, besides being very funny, is that it’s really very “Chris Weagel” and at the same time, if you live in the United States at least, it’s about something that everyone can see happening where they live.

Check out all of Chris’ work at Human-Dog. Here’s the permalink for Lac St. Clair.

Look for part 2 of my conversation with Chris on Monday.

Tutorial: 3ivx Dual Pass Compression

We get lots of requests for this. It’s actually the first videoblogging tutorial I made back in December 2004 (though this one is updated for QuickTime 7). This isn’t a free deal though - 3ivx costs $20 and QuickTime Pro is $30. The big thing though is that 3ivx creates much nicer looking videos than Apple’s regular mpeg4 codec and unlike H.264 they play well on older computers and work with QuickTime 6. This is a long video (11:30) because I do a lot of explaining as I go along. So you don’t have to sit through it over and over again, I put together a quick reference guide (2 pages .pdf).

Also for reference, here is the test clip that I show in the tutorial:

New Vlog: rusted gate

This video is by Joanna Dillon from her vlog rusted gate. In her email to us she had this to say about choosing this video, “It’s really hard to choose one video to represent you… especially if your style or purpose is just coming clear… not to mention technical prowess. While this video may be the scariest video to put up because I’m still quite camera shy, I think it’s interesting because I had been taping things I did daily… the usual. This was about something I rarely do. I also like the music to feature just as much as the video, and I think this was a nice pair. It also generated the most comments I’ve ever had, so I must have gotten something across!”

I really like blown out black and white look of the video. It makes it so that you can’t really see the makeup - just it’s affect on her.

Please leave comments on the vlog.

Okay, we’re going to try something a little different with the way we feature new vlogs. Check out this video and if we haven’t featured you here yet (even if you’ve already sent us a link) please pick out a post that you really love - one that you think best represents what you’re all about (we know that can be a tough choice) and send it to us here: newvlog@freevlog.org.

Freevlog Video Pop-Up Maker

Freevlog Video Pop-Up Maker Click here to download

Here’s a handy tool that will ensure that your Windows Media and QuickTime videos work correctly in Internet Explorer. The Freevlog Video Pop-Up Maker is based (90%) on Josh Kinberg’s great pop-up maker. Over the weekend, with the help of Jen Simmons and Markus Sandy, I gave it some Freevlog styling and made it address the new issue with the way IE handles ActiveX controls. So read more about it and give it a try. By the way, it’s what we’re using here to play our videos in pop-up windows.

[UPDATE: 4.26.06] I just added support for .m4v (.m4v was already in there) and .m4a files (Apple’s video and audio podcast formats - if you’re using them).

[UPDATE: 5.6.06] Josh Kinberg updated the pop-up maker with support for Flash video (both .flv and .swf) and Real video. Thanks Josh! I also zipped up the current version for installation on your own server - popup2go.zip.

Kick Ass Vlog: Looking At Things

Jay Dedman’s “Looking At Things” is our first Kick Ass Vlog post. I show this video to new videobloggers all the time because I think it’s such a great example of a concise, poetic and powerful piece. On top of that, it’s just a single-take with a simple voice over. This is an example of why I always say that authenticity and a good idea trump a big budget any day.

So today’s the day. First, Ryanne put together this intro where we try to explain what Freevlog 3 is all about. Don’t worry, that’s not all we have for you today. We just wanted to get this out of the way.

Freevlog 3 is on the way!

Ryanne and I are working hard on a brand new Freevlog. As you can see, there will be a videoblog up front with the focus on CONTENT. The new Freevlog will still have the basic “get a videoblog for free” tutorial but the rest of it will focus on how to make your content kick ass.

So rest up this weekend, shoot some video, and come back Monday ready to get going. While you’re at it, why don’t you subscribe to our feed so you don’t forget.
