Can you tell that we love Chris Weagel? This is why we didn’t post much for the last two weeks. Besides getting Vloggercon ready we were working with Jay Dedman and Markus Sandy to create Have Money Will Vlog. Here’s the basic idea from the FAQ: “Traditional artists can apply for grants to make their work. Have Money Will Vlog supports videobloggers trying to do the amazing. The power of the community can fund projects on a regular basis. You easily spend $10 or more everytime you go out to see a movie…so consider donating $10 a month to a videoblog project. If we have 100 people that give $10 a month, that’s $1000. Let’s energize creators.” So we’re starting with Chris (25% of the money is already raised) and then we’ll help fund another project. Maybe it’ll be yours - send us a proposal.
What are you waiting for? Get over there and help make stuff happen. Then be sure to subscribe to the whole site or the project so you can keep tabs on how it’s going.

I just wanted to take a minute and tell you about a new service called VlogAssist. It’s a videoblogging message board with topics ranging from help to events, news, links and more. Go check it out and sign up. The more people who use it the more useful it’ll be.
Also Klaas, who runs VlogAssist, was nice enough to go through our new book and post all the links that we mention! How cool is that? Now you can easily follow along as you read.

Roboshithead is one of my favorite shows from Manhattan Neighborhood Network. One of the Producers, Chuck Stern, is a good friend of Jay’s and was finally convinced to start a videoblog after months of us pushing him. This episode is a classic. I think it’s creepy that one character is named ‘Jame’. Roboshithead borrows the best of cinema techniques to bring you these creepy DV vinettes. Enjoy!

About two weeks ago Apple updated QuickTime to version 7.1 and I’ve just gotten around to playing with it. The great news is that they fixed something that was preventing us from recommending H.264 as compression codec. Though H.264 still isn’t as compatible as 3ivx it does allow your videos to look better and be smaller downloads. And now with QuickTime 7.1 you can compress your videos to .mp4 using the H.264 codec and get them to play on an iPod. Also, in the latest version of iMovie (tested in 6.0.2) you can use the export for iPod option without it squishing your video.
So here are some sample videos that are roughly the same quality. The first one is compressed with dual pass 3ivx and the second one is compressed with dual pass h.264. The big deal is that the H.264 video is 30 frames per second instead of 15 frames per second (this means you get smoother motion) and it’s 1.91MB vs. 2.3MB for the 3ivx file (16.96% smaller).
For more on how to use H.264 (I’ll have a complete tutorial next week) you can check out this post from last fall. In the meantime, update to QuickTime 7.1 or 7.1 Pro.

Oh Blip.tv how do I love thee? Let me count the ways in this tutorial. We love Blip.tv and one of the big reasons is that you can cross post to your blog and other places like The Internet Archive. This means you can have Blip post your video to your blog for you, no html needed! It’s a huge time saver and a great feature for sharing your videos across the web. If you haven’t already signed up for Blip.tv and need to start with that, check out this longer video tutorial instead.

This is a video from poetryvlog.com. In his email to us, Michael, the creator explained, “As an adult I appreciate vlogs that entertain and enlighten, and having owned with my wife a secondhand/antiquarian bookshop for a few decades, it was clear to me that vlogging is the perfect internet medium for the presentation and celebration of poets and their poetry…Here you will see and hear Rhonda Ward recite her poem “Legacy”. She is the only poet so far to recite her reading on the site. She has a remarkable presence before the camera, and you can view the video as often as you please.” Enjoy!

My apologies for posting this late. First, for those of you unfamiliar with Carp Caviar, let me explain a bit. Erik Nelson from Bottom Union created it in December last year, posting this first promo. Then he invited everyone to join in by making their own. In one post he describes it like this, “It’s a game, get it? But probably less like chess and more like pong.” So in this video I talk with Chris Weagel about an amazing and surreal Carp Caviar video that he made. Along the way, he talks about how he approaches the videos that he makes and about kind of collaboration that Carp Caviar has inspired.
Check out all of Chris’ work at Human-Dog.

This video is by Matty from his vlog Video Bloggin’ in Beantown. In his email to us he said, “I am a soon to graduate senior from Massart in Boston. I got the vlogging bug from Ryanne Hodson when she did a presentation in my streaming video class. I figured this would be a great way for me to get some of my work up on the web. This definitely best describes the work I have been doing as of late.”
This one is fun.

This is a video by Mellisa from her vlog Empress of Spring. In her email to us she said, “When I started posting vlogs a few months ago, my blog readership almost vanished completely… But I don’t really care what the readership does. I know there’s something very compelling to me about vlogs and I know I want to express myself that way and see how others vlog as well. Even if the party is still quite small. Or maybe because it is.” And about this particular video she said, “My father died from colon cancer that very likely could have been stopped by early detection. [This video] was done very quickly with my daughter in a light-hearted attempt to encourage my adult siblings to start having annual colonoscopies.”
I would imagine that this video was very successful in that regard.
