Thanks for your great tutorial on blogger headers! But I was wondering if you know how to make an image in the header stretch to take up the whole header space, instead of just centering it. Thanks! Carolyn.

hey, it doesn’t work! the download that is it keeps stopping. Used Windows media player the other one asked for download plug in but it didn’t download anything but still wouldn’t play - so have not seen said lesson and am still in the dark. Cheers, Carmel

Hello Ryanne! Should there be an image here? I can´t see it, is it just me…?
Is sounds really helpful what your doing, but some of it is lost for me without the image… Would you also happen to know how could I change my posting images settings? Thankyou for your answer. M.

I’ve been hoping for a way to add a photo ever since I joined last year! Thanks so much for the easy-to-follow instructions!

  11. gregon 23 May 2007 at 8:07 am

thanks for the info… but does this just center an image, or can you take up the entire area with an entirely new header, which is what I suspect most people would want to do (including myself…)

btw, is there an ideal size for the header? As in what’s the default header size on blogger?
I’d rather not just load any image and find its too big.
    thanks.

  21. Willenaon 23 May 2007 at 11:24 am

Carmel, it doesn’t work for me either. I tried several times and waited for almost an hour. Are you on dial up? Maybe those with slow connections are disqualified? Oh well. It wouldn’t be the first time…

  22. Satrohrajon 23 May 2007 at 11:35 am

My blog looks better with a text header…
    Anyway, Thanks for the tip.

Thank you for the tutorial. I’ve been trying this out for the past week and when I download pictures from Picassa my header turns out huge. It doesn’t stay nice and small at the top of the page. My whole screen is the header. Do you know what I’m doing wrong?
    Thank you.

    Thanks,
    Eric

  28. Carolyn Hoffmanon 23 May 2007 at 5:11 pm

Can you please summarize the tutorial in words so those of us still laboring under dial-up can learn too? Thanks!

  29. brickvikingon 23 May 2007 at 5:25 pm

Darn girl. It’s THAT easy???? And to think that last night I went into the template code, and edited that puppy by hand… sheesh. Still, now that I know it’s that easy, I can try and implement it on other aspects of the theme I chose. Thanks for the description, by the way. You deserve kudos for your explanation.

  30. red.mantissaon 23 May 2007 at 5:39 pm

hi. its a great feature, ain’t it? but, alas, similar to the picture widget, this one will not allow for special tweaks, like positioning/placement of your image, or re-sizing your image. there’s likely some way to alter the widget code, but only if you are into that stuff. or … there’s always the good old fashioned im src in an html/javascript widget, once you have changed a tiny bit of code in your template. sounds complicated, i know. not really though.

anyway, this image header widget’s a good start.

    :)

  31. Ryanon 23 May 2007 at 5:42 pm

I could not find an answer to the question about size. Can we stretch increase the size with the size of the image or are they all just made to fit in the box?

  32. Ryanneon 23 May 2007 at 5:52 pm

    hey ryan
i would just experiment with the size of your image.
the widget is going to upload the image at it’s original size
so what you see is what you get.

if you want to get crazy
you can go into the edit HTML tab
and try to stretch things there too.
but that’s not always much fun!

great job!! i have yet to switch to the widget base blogger..

what would be nice is if we can edit the background image of the blog … :P

  35. xavieron 24 May 2007 at 12:21 am

I use this dimension “759×146″ for header at my blog. The template name is “Stretch Denim”. It fit very well, i think.

    Nice tutorial Ryanne.

  41. DharmaBumDameon 24 May 2007 at 12:43 pm

For everyone asking how wide a header image has to be to fill the box (at leat in Minima): about 645 to 650 pixels wide. Good luck everyone!

  42. Pamon 24 May 2007 at 1:13 pm

My image comes up huge - is there a way to change the size? It takes up the whole screen. Do I need to adjust the size before I upload it?

  43. ryanneon 24 May 2007 at 2:23 pm

    hey all
    thanks for all the comments.
you will need to re-size your image before you upload. blogger will keep the original size of the image you upload. so make sure it’s small enough to fit.
it will depend on your template, how large or small your image should be. experiment and you’ll get it.

  45. Michael Mainon 24 May 2007 at 6:18 pm

It’s a very good instructional video, and I’m glad to have seen how the new layout functions work…since I’m “banned” from even toying with them without committing my blog, and its hosting to Google.

Alas, as with all of blogger’s new features if you have your own hosted site, like me, and don’t want to host on blogger, i.e. you still use that dang ol’ ftp….blogger doesn’t let you do this…at least not easily.

My blog is my homepage. I own a web server, so I can’t justify altering my DNS settings - slogging up my email and web traffic possibly for days - simply because blogger has some new toys.

I got around the image heading with the “Old” “New” Blogger …sort of by altering my template so that the font size of my “blog title” is set to zero. I debated whether to keep the description or not, and am still playing with it, as I am the entire initially written blogger layout. I’ve tweaked it so much I really only use blogger to write my posts - and that may change since I just lost my latest rambling halfway thru thinking the new “auto save” function would work…first time I counted on it…it only saved the title of my post.

If blogger is not going to provide updated interfaces and widgets for people who don’t want to redirect their email and everything from their hosted site, I’ve decided to gradually create my own template and tweak blogger so it fits what *I* want, not what blogger wants me to do.

I debated word press which really does all this stuff and always has but having four years of posts on blogger, it seemed like an immense hassle.

I don’t really understand blogger’s reasoning in coming up with a new interface and layout that won’t work for folks who have no need for their hosting.

Anyway, I need to go re-write my post…it was a very good video and I’m glad to see folks like you doing stuff like this…cuz blogger doesn’t really seem interested in doing it.

    Grace & Peace,

    Michael Main

    Thanks Ryanne!
That was a great explanation for those of us that need to keep it simple. Now if there was the same type of explanation for how to put an image and some text as well…and don’t even try to explain to me what Michael Main was talking about…..this is working just great for my simple style.

thank you very much. I tried it. It worked out well when I clicked on preview but once I click on view blog, I don’t see it there :(

    Why?

  49. Firoze Shakiron 25 May 2007 at 10:37 am

You guys at Bloggers need to wake up, why dont you check Word Press presentation of templates much simpler , consumer friendly, header , widgets all accomodative.. you guys are so backdated, sometimes I think I am not far from the mark that New Blogger sucks..
I consider Bloggers to be my humble beginnings so this is not just about bad mouthwashing..but you guys at Bloggers take everything for granted, your Beta was good.. exciting , but than we are back to square one..
Your Word Verification on my multi colored ass was what broke this camels back..
At Word Press , I can post 600 blogs in a single day , but they dont treat me as a leper of a positive spam..Wake up.. your Bloggers are all waking up in a get well soon ward at Word Press.
    Take care..

Why is it that you make make everything difficult or it doesn’t work?If you want to place a picture or what ever on the header why dont you guys do it the same way you put pictures in your blogg so simple so easy and you cant figure it out. MAKE IT EASY MAKE IT SIMPLE……

Now I dare you to change it and make it easy!!!

I can upload the image but the placement option doesn’t show up.

Which means I have to type a letter in so the image will load.

Wish I knew why the placement option is missing. Any idea?

  60. Ryanneon 26 May 2007 at 11:34 am

    THESE ARE THE TEXT INSTRUCTIONS:

you’ll want to sign into blogger
    on your dashboard click Layout

there is a section called Header, click Edit there.
there will a choice to upload an image
or link to an image on the web.
    make your choice

    click save.
and then click save on the layout page

    that should do it!

So If all of your pictures match the space perfectly it works. Needs some fine tuneing but what a nice feature. Thanks Blogger! We love you at www.Banuskitchen.blogspot.com Banu

  80. bhasningomon 28 May 2007 at 2:45 am

    it’s just amazing!

  81. risa bearon 28 May 2007 at 4:28 am

Well, this would have been a nice feature if I had the option to put the image (a simple thumbnail, see at http://www.epud.net/~bears/index.html) on the left and push title and description to the right — but it doesn’t seem to be able do anything but a) get underneath the text and foul it up or b) replace the text, without an ADA compliant tooltip or alt text to at least let search engines know what they’re looking at. So I get to either screencap a design that imitates the header and use that image (still without ADA compliance) or just keep waiting, or, as Michael says, go to Wordpress as I should have done in the beginning … sigh …

  82. risa bearon 28 May 2007 at 4:33 am

But the screencast, I agree with the request on how to do that — not that I’ve seen it yet — copper wires here, which means a 54K runs at 28.8Kc… Thank you, Ryanne.

  83. warrenon 28 May 2007 at 10:20 am

I’m glad Blogger-team finally saw the light. That they decided to correct this oversight fits in the “Welll, DUH!!!!” category…. I’m glad it’s there, but it shocked me that Blogger team left this out of their specifications for Blogger 2 in the first place. Shocked, Shocked, I tell you! :-)

All the draggy droppy template stuff became useless, when you couldn’t even add a picture to your header.

Oh, and they make it hard to even delete the header element so you could put your own in place of it. Thanks blogger team, and thank you Ryanne for telling us about this!

    Enough whinging from me….

Thanks for the tutorial…it was very helpful!!

I’m on a mac, and the image doesn’t upload right away…in fact it takes forever. Much better to do it on a PC…the image uploaded right away.

My banner width is 693 pixels x 240 pixels in height.
And it stretched all the way. Hope that helps people out there trying to figure it out :)

Great video. However, I’ve been trying to do this for days, but I just can’t get the image to load. It’s not big, I’ve tried saving it in different formats, tried posting it to the blog (which worked) and taking the URL from there, but I never get past the incessant yellow sign and its twirling radiating lines!

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

    Thanks -

I have a question about templates. It seems that I am able to make my own template for the blog, but the only thing is customizable is HTML (CSS). Where can I place (in the web) all the images used by my self-made template? Is there any way to do that using the Google BlogSpot mechanics?

    Thanks.

Thats pretty cool - now i can go back to the layout i wanted instead of picking one that allowed me to move an image above the header!

  113. Orableon 31 May 2007 at 5:46 pm

FOR EVERYONE WHO’S HAD TROUBLE WITH THIS FUNCTION:

Hi everyone. Further to my post yesterday, and in reply to all of those above who are experiencing the same difficulties uploading the pictures, I don’t know exactly where the problem lies, BUT - and here’s the interesting bit - after trying different servers, internet programs and even computers (PCs and Macs), I finally got my image to load without any problems using a PC laptop with a LINUX/UNIX based OS on a simple dial-up connection!

I do hope that this helps some of you out there who have been frustrated by ‘bad URL’ messages, etc. and unable to get your images to load!

    -Orable

Thanks for the turtorial. For those who want the image to take up the entire header image, My suggestion is to created the image in Photoshop for the demensions that the header takes up (have not checked yet what thoses are).

very nice feature, long time in coming. What we need now is the size of the header space to be posted in an obvious place - say, in the header edit widget, near the field to upload the pic. That’ll save users tons of time.

I read in the comments that someone regretted not to have started with Wordpress. Well, actually, Blogger is better since it allows you to fully customize your blog appearance. Wordpress (free hosting) only allows you to modify the CSS. Look at my blog to see how much customization you can do with Blogger! :)

If you’re trying to create a banner photo that will fill the top of the screen for your header, try a great new free web app called Picnik at www.picnik.com.

I uploaded a picture from my computer and used the Resize option under “Edit” to set the size at 1100 x 170 and it fit the banner width perfectly, whether in IE or Firefox. Picnik also allows you to do all kinds of special effects on your photos. You can also upload pictures from Flickr, Picasa or Facebook.

  155. biyahengpinoyon 12 Jun 2007 at 4:37 am

i haven’t watched the video yet, but as soon as i’ve seen that feature added to blogger, i’ve tested it already. took me a while to choose what image to choose and how to present it and make it fit my blog (it is a philippine travel blog). it was also a lot of work to make the correct sizing on my image so it would perfectly fit my header. after a long work, i’ve finally done it without using any references or asking for anyone’s help and it really paid off. it felt so good after i’ve made the modifications in my blog’s header. can someone check it and tell me about my header? i’m not sure if i should change the image though. i will watch the tutorial clip later.

    Ryanne,
I have been trying to add images with my mac, and none seem to load up properly. During the upload, the “loading” icon just keeps spinning and spinning, and my picture never appears, nor does it land on the page. The process seems to work just fine with a PC, but as the mac is otherwise easier to use, I would rather stick with that.
Any light you could shed on this connundrum would be a great help. Until then, I will just keep pushing along. Thank you.

Thanks for the info. It was very easy to follow and now I can import pix as I want.

  180. Doug Wikenon 22 Jul 2007 at 7:02 pm

    HESE ARE THE TEXT INSTRUCTIONS:

you’ll want to sign into blogger
    on your dashboard click Layout

there is a section called Header, click Edit there.
there will a choice to upload an image
or link to an image on the web.
    make your choice

    click save.
and then click save on the layout page

    that should do it!

As per a couple of previous posts. Use a program like the free Irfanview to size your image so it is in the 650-690 pixel width. At least that works with the “scribe” template.

Irvanview can be used to generate a new blank image. Pick a fill or color that works with your blog. Open Irfanview in a second window and load any image you want in the header image. Use edit-copy and then paste it into a location you have marked on the blank image. Then use Irfanview to add the text you want.

Once done, insert image as per instructions provided. Save, etc.

Then edit that element which will allow the options to use the image as a background image or to replace the text. Then save again.

In the website above is a temporary test I set up for a friend who my wife says “should not be allowed to drive on the information highway”.
