Thanks for your great tutorial on blogger headers! But I was wondering if you know how to make an image in the header stretch to take up the whole header space, instead of just centering it. Thanks! Carolyn.
hey, it doesn’t work! the download that is it keeps stopping. Used Windows media player the other one asked for download plug in but it didn’t download anything but still wouldn’t play - so have not seen said lesson and am still in the dark. Cheers, Carmel
Thanks a lot! I’ve been waiting to be able to do this.
Thank you for the great tutorial! I’m brand new (as of today) to Blogger and I was thinking about the boring header… perfect!
Thanks again!
Lotus
Very very helpful!
Thanks a lot!
Thanks so very much for this tip! I can’t wait to try it out.
thank you for the simple instructions; I found it
very helpful and easy to follow. Thanks
Hello Ryanne! Should there be an image here? I can´t see it, is it just me…?
Is sounds really helpful what your doing, but some of it is lost for me without the image… Would you also happen to know how could I change my posting images settings? Thankyou for your answer. M.
I’ve been hoping for a way to add a photo ever since I joined last year! Thanks so much for the easy-to-follow instructions!
thanks for the info… but does this just center an image, or can you take up the entire area with an entirely new header, which is what I suspect most people would want to do (including myself…)
Greg

Very cool…thanks for the tutorial!
Thanks for this great and helpful modification that you were able to incorporate with blogger templates. This will surely be a big help to newbies like me.
Thank you so much. The instructions are very clear. I am busy with choosing what photo to use already!!
Thanks. Maybe you could do a screencast on how to make screencasts? That’s something I’d like to be able to do. :*)
I am brand new at this. I like Google instruction on how too start a blog. Thank you
would someone give me short text…my work cpu keeps runnign error messages on video right now
Great Video! Im going to go work on my header right now!

Im all excited, sorry!
hay everyone…
i’m okky…i’m new blogger here..I need help from everyone who want to teach me how to put or upload the image on my blog…i want to know step by step to put an image on my blog…i just want to make my blog better…so please help me…we will be good friend…thanks before all….
btw, is there an ideal size for the header? As in what’s the default header size on blogger?
I’d rather not just load any image and find its too big.
thanks.
Carmel, it doesn’t work for me either. I tried several times and waited for almost an hour. Are you on dial up? Maybe those with slow connections are disqualified? Oh well. It wouldn’t be the first time…
My blog looks better with a text header…
Anyway, Thanks for the tip.
Thank you so much for the beautiful and simple tutorial sweetheart!
lots of love comin ur way
Thank you for the tutorial. I’ve been trying this out for the past week and when I download pictures from Picassa my header turns out huge. It doesn’t stay nice and small at the top of the page. My whole screen is the header. Do you know what I’m doing wrong?
Thank you.
Thank you very much for posting this! I’ll be changing my header soon now, as soon as I figure out a suitable image!
where is the tutorial
Do I have to enter an image into the header, can’t I put a google map instead? Is there an easy way to do this?
Thanks,
Eric
Can you please summarize the tutorial in words so those of us still laboring under dial-up can learn too? Thanks!
Darn girl. It’s THAT easy???? And to think that last night I went into the template code, and edited that puppy by hand… sheesh. Still, now that I know it’s that easy, I can try and implement it on other aspects of the theme I chose. Thanks for the description, by the way. You deserve kudos for your explanation.
hi. its a great feature, ain’t it? but, alas, similar to the picture widget, this one will not allow for special tweaks, like positioning/placement of your image, or re-sizing your image. there’s likely some way to alter the widget code, but only if you are into that stuff. or … there’s always the good old fashioned im src in an html/javascript widget, once you have changed a tiny bit of code in your template. sounds complicated, i know. not really though.
anyway, this image header widget’s a good start.
I could not find an answer to the question about size. Can we stretch increase the size with the size of the image or are they all just made to fit in the box?
hey ryan
i would just experiment with the size of your image.
the widget is going to upload the image at it’s original size
so what you see is what you get.
if you want to get crazy
you can go into the edit HTML tab
and try to stretch things there too.
but that’s not always much fun!
-ryanne
btw U ROCK!!!! ur tutorials are super easy to follow and make it SO easy to pimp out my blog!!! ^_^
i feel like a genius!!!
keeps teachin’ me great stuff!!!
great job!! i have yet to switch to the widget base blogger..
what would be nice is if we can edit the background image of the blog …
I use this dimension “759×146″ for header at my blog. The template name is “Stretch Denim”. It fit very well, i think.
Thanks for this video!made my day
Thanks for this it really helps and makes my blog look more personalized!! Love it!
This never works for me. Tried it fifteen times, I never get the graphic that I either link or upload as my header. Oh well….
Really good tutorial—-kudos!
Nice tutorial Ryanne.
For everyone asking how wide a header image has to be to fill the box (at leat in Minima): about 645 to 650 pixels wide. Good luck everyone!
My image comes up huge - is there a way to change the size? It takes up the whole screen. Do I need to adjust the size before I upload it?
hey all
thanks for all the comments.
you will need to re-size your image before you upload. blogger will keep the original size of the image you upload. so make sure it’s small enough to fit.
it will depend on your template, how large or small your image should be. experiment and you’ll get it.
-ryanne
Hello,
Can anyone help me as I am new here. How to edit the templates.
stella_joi
It’s a very good instructional video, and I’m glad to have seen how the new layout functions work…since I’m “banned” from even toying with them without committing my blog, and its hosting to Google.
Alas, as with all of blogger’s new features if you have your own hosted site, like me, and don’t want to host on blogger, i.e. you still use that dang ol’ ftp….blogger doesn’t let you do this…at least not easily.
My blog is my homepage. I own a web server, so I can’t justify altering my DNS settings - slogging up my email and web traffic possibly for days - simply because blogger has some new toys.
I got around the image heading with the “Old” “New” Blogger …sort of by altering my template so that the font size of my “blog title” is set to zero. I debated whether to keep the description or not, and am still playing with it, as I am the entire initially written blogger layout. I’ve tweaked it so much I really only use blogger to write my posts - and that may change since I just lost my latest rambling halfway thru thinking the new “auto save” function would work…first time I counted on it…it only saved the title of my post.
If blogger is not going to provide updated interfaces and widgets for people who don’t want to redirect their email and everything from their hosted site, I’ve decided to gradually create my own template and tweak blogger so it fits what *I* want, not what blogger wants me to do.
I debated word press which really does all this stuff and always has but having four years of posts on blogger, it seemed like an immense hassle.
I don’t really understand blogger’s reasoning in coming up with a new interface and layout that won’t work for folks who have no need for their hosting.
Anyway, I need to go re-write my post…it was a very good video and I’m glad to see folks like you doing stuff like this…cuz blogger doesn’t really seem interested in doing it.
Grace & Peace,
Michael Main

Thanks Ryanne!
That was a great explanation for those of us that need to keep it simple. Now if there was the same type of explanation for how to put an image and some text as well…and don’t even try to explain to me what Michael Main was talking about…..this is working just great for my simple style.
thank you very much. I tried it. It worked out well when I clicked on preview but once I click on view blog, I don’t see it there
Why?
You guys at Bloggers need to wake up, why dont you check Word Press presentation of templates much simpler , consumer friendly, header , widgets all accomodative.. you guys are so backdated, sometimes I think I am not far from the mark that New Blogger sucks..
I consider Bloggers to be my humble beginnings so this is not just about bad mouthwashing..but you guys at Bloggers take everything for granted, your Beta was good.. exciting , but than we are back to square one..
Your Word Verification on my multi colored ass was what broke this camels back..
At Word Press , I can post 600 blogs in a single day , but they dont treat me as a leper of a positive spam..Wake up.. your Bloggers are all waking up in a get well soon ward at Word Press.
Take care..

I was the only one putting buzznet tags on my post before you came up with tagging..
Hi!
Great explanation… and glad you made it so simple. Now it’s time to give it a try!
Thanks!
Why is it that you make make everything difficult or it doesn’t work?If you want to place a picture or what ever on the header why dont you guys do it the same way you put pictures in your blogg so simple so easy and you cant figure it out. MAKE IT EASY MAKE IT SIMPLE……
Now I dare you to change it and make it easy!!!
Nice Piece of Work. Nowadays most ppl want everything very easily done. Nice post. Ryanne is a cute name. Hope we can stay in touch.

Thank you Ryanne, great show; now do one to show how to put a video any place on the blog, because when I tried, it only allows me to put it on the right hand side of the blog screen, but I’ve seen blogs with videos in the middle of the blog. Thanks a lot.
Every time I attempt to do this, the yellow “waiting” sign runs interminably and my picture is not posted. I’ve tried various sizes and none seem to work. Troubleshooting strategies, anyone?
how do u get a game onto ur BLOG
okey
Hello Ryanne!
Thanks you very much for taking your time to prepare and give us this helpful tutorial. Really Helpful. Will try it out. I hope I can make it.
Cheers
Callie
I am also among the people who cannot get the video to play. It says “plug-in not available.” Can we just get the written instructions, please.
Cathy
I can upload the image but the placement option doesn’t show up.
Which means I have to type a letter in so the image will load.
Wish I knew why the placement option is missing. Any idea?
THESE ARE THE TEXT INSTRUCTIONS:
you’ll want to sign into blogger
on your dashboard click Layout
there is a section called Header, click Edit there.
there will a choice to upload an image
or link to an image on the web.
make your choice
click save.
and then click save on the layout page
that should do it!
-ryanne
can you help me how to add some designs in my blog?
Thanks Ryanne. you da bomb.
Like some of the others, I’m also on slow dial-up and unable to view the instructions …loading is to slow.
Is there some way you can help us?? I was excited when I saw this possibility — only to have such a let-down when I couldn’t view the instructions to do it. :~(
WoW!!! I didn’t know that, thanks for the video
thanks, it’s great
This is really a nice feature. I tried it after using your tutorial. The problem I find is that you cannot arrange the pictures or put more than one or adjust the size. So If all of your pictures match the space perfectly it works. Needs some fine tuneing but what a nice feature. Thanks Blogger! We love you at www.Banuskitchen.blogspot.com Banu
I agree, this so easy and not wasting my time.
Ryanne, I am so in love with you right now. Thank you so much for the tutorial! Easy peasy!
thanks it is great.
It didn´t work for me either! The download stopped. Instead I got a firewall warning: Malware Bagle.C in. Used Windows media player. I´m sorry to say, I have not seen the lesson.
thanks
Cheers - very helpful - THANKS
Thanks for the video cast. Would you share with me what program you used to create it or how you filmed it? Did you place the video cam in front of the screen?
I appreciate your answer.
Ulli…
“Thanks for your great tutorial on blogger headers! But I was wondering if you know how to make an image in the header stretch to take up the whole header space, instead of just centering it. Thanks! Carolyn.”
Ya…what Carolyn said….I need to know, too! PLEASE!!!!
Nice tutorial! I’m curious about the software you used to make it too. I also got a chuckle out of your original header description: ‘you never had so much fun’. Actually I have. It’s really not much fun creating a blog!
Thanks for the instructions. Think I’ll go put a picture on my header!
Dale
Thanks for the screencast. It’s very helpful, your nice tutorial.
THANKS!!! That was simple and easy to understand!!
hey,
It’s not working for me. I mean the video. So could I have some text explaining it please.
J
it’s just amazing!
Well, this would have been a nice feature if I had the option to put the image (a simple thumbnail, see at http://www.epud.net/~bears/index.html) on the left and push title and description to the right — but it doesn’t seem to be able do anything but a) get underneath the text and foul it up or b) replace the text, without an ADA compliant tooltip or alt text to at least let search engines know what they’re looking at. So I get to either screencap a design that imitates the header and use that image (still without ADA compliance) or just keep waiting, or, as Michael says, go to Wordpress as I should have done in the beginning … sigh …
But the screencast, I agree with the request on how to do that — not that I’ve seen it yet — copper wires here, which means a 54K runs at 28.8Kc… Thank you, Ryanne.
I’m glad Blogger-team finally saw the light. That they decided to correct this oversight fits in the “Welll, DUH!!!!” category…. I’m glad it’s there, but it shocked me that Blogger team left this out of their specifications for Blogger 2 in the first place. Shocked, Shocked, I tell you!
All the draggy droppy template stuff became useless, when you couldn’t even add a picture to your header.
Oh, and they make it hard to even delete the header element so you could put your own in place of it. Thanks blogger team, and thank you Ryanne for telling us about this!
Enough whinging from me….
Warren
Thank you it was very helpful
Thank you so much Ryan… that’s great…
thank you again and again

It worked great for me! I basically used a 9″ x 3″ size and it fit perfectly. It seems you could go as tall as you want though. Thank you Blogger for adding this!

Zappy!
Thanks for your video. That’s great tutorial.
However I can’ use these steps caused by classic template.
I need the assistant to edit the header of my blog.
wanwar,
www.thevideosense.com/user/wanwar
go to your dashboard, if old template look in the right column for edit template, update your template. CLick layout, now click on header, click edit, create an image that is approx 673×135, upload, save, done.
Thanks Ryanne, that was great!
The editorial still does not play…As soon as you get to the point where you are going to open a photo in your dashboard it starts at the beginning again…
Thanks for your tutorial! Very Helpful! Look forward to implementing! Thanks Blogger staff for finally making this option a reality!

It worked great but I did not like it so I erased it you come see my blog and see if I should have kept it.
Excellent! I tried it and it’s going to work for me - just have to decide on the picture!
I wish there were other tutorial video’s. I’ve tried to put lists of the blogs I visit here, add pictures and animated links (from lyricsdownload.com) of my favourite songs - oh, and advertise my myspace website! As much as I’ve tried to add elements and links ect - I’ve come up with blanks! Any help to add stuff to my blog would be great - but a video would be ideal!
Thanks so much for the video. I want to make a header to fill the space provided. What are the dimensions of a blogger header?
wanted to use this new function of the header tutorial that i just viewed. my site which has been chng’d a long time ago does now have the features to allow me to make any of the changes as the tutorial shows. what would be the cause and how can i get this rectified so that i may use this new feature?
thanks,
rog
wow thank you very much its so good i learned thanks thanks for your help
osos72
Thanks for the tutorial…it was very helpful!!
I’m on a mac, and the image doesn’t upload right away…in fact it takes forever. Much better to do it on a PC…the image uploaded right away.
My banner width is 693 pixels x 240 pixels in height.
And it stretched all the way. Hope that helps people out there trying to figure it out
http://mycreativevisions.blogspot.com/
Great video. However, I’ve been trying to do this for days, but I just can’t get the image to load. It’s not big, I’ve tried saving it in different formats, tried posting it to the blog (which worked) and taking the URL from there, but I never get past the incessant yellow sign and its twirling radiating lines!
Does anyone have any ideas on this?
Thanks -
pls help to upload images on my website.I M TRYING FROM MANY DAYS BUT NOT GOT.
SO ANYONE KNOWING CAN PLS HELP ME ON SENDING MAIL ON MY GIVEN ADDRESS.
THANKS IN ADVANCE
I have a question about templates. It seems that I am able to make my own template for the blog, but the only thing is customizable is HTML (CSS). Where can I place (in the web) all the images used by my self-made template? Is there any way to do that using the Google BlogSpot mechanics?
Thanks.
fabulous as always, ryanne! thank you so much for doing this.
I don’t want to wait till the end of Summer
, I want it now. Who with me?
save your time and join me.
Thats pretty cool - now i can go back to the layout i wanted instead of picking one that allowed me to move an image above the header!
FOR EVERYONE WHO’S HAD TROUBLE WITH THIS FUNCTION:
Hi everyone. Further to my post yesterday, and in reply to all of those above who are experiencing the same difficulties uploading the pictures, I don’t know exactly where the problem lies, BUT - and here’s the interesting bit - after trying different servers, internet programs and even computers (PCs and Macs), I finally got my image to load without any problems using a PC laptop with a LINUX/UNIX based OS on a simple dial-up connection!
I do hope that this helps some of you out there who have been frustrated by ‘bad URL’ messages, etc. and unable to get your images to load!
-Orable
Thanks for the turtorial. For those who want the image to take up the entire header image, My suggestion is to created the image in Photoshop for the demensions that the header takes up (have not checked yet what thoses are).
Hey !
That was very helpful Now it’s the time to give it shot.
Wish me luck !
hello
I would ,like become your good friend
send for me your good email
bye for now
very nice feature, long time in coming. What we need now is the size of the header space to be posted in an obvious place - say, in the header edit widget, near the field to upload the pic. That’ll save users tons of time.
Hey !
That was very helpful Now it’s the time to give it shot.

OH MY GOD…this was exactly what I needed…thank you so much
Thanks for great tutorial. I couldn’t get my photo to be as sharp as I would like, but as I am a sheep of limited brain, I think I can be forgiven. Thanks a lot
Thanks a lot for yr help in suggesting this opportunity.
But I met 2 problems:
1) The blog become smaller than before leaving blank space at right and left of the border.
2) The picture is not at the center of the header.
You could see it at my blogspot address.
Do you have pls some suggestion?
Thankyou and regards
Eduardo
Yippy! Thanks for the clarification.
Eduardo, I had a similar problem. Let me know if you’ve found a fix!
Great presentation! Thank you very much!
hi! and thanks to everybody
I read in the comments that someone regretted not to have started with Wordpress. Well, actually, Blogger is better since it allows you to fully customize your blog appearance. Wordpress (free hosting) only allows you to modify the CSS. Look at my blog to see how much customization you can do with Blogger!
Why can’t a header include a photo AND text?
Or is that too much too ask?
thanks….
but problems still occur…
but thanks anyway

This would be much better than just the two choice with or without title

I’m having trouble fitting photos into the header. When I put them into the header they’re huge! Is there any way to determine the size of the pic first? Or to reduce it?

Hi Ryanne,
Very nice instructional video! What program did you make it with, please? I’d have guessed Captivate but that’s not available for Macs, is it?
Thanks,

A very good tutorial.
Tanks for the effort making it.
Thanks!
Does anyone know what types of files can be uploaded as the header?

Thanks so much! I linked to this on my blog. I *really* appreciate the help.
Thanks, I needed this. What I really want to know, though, is how did you get your archive list to display in reverse-chron order? Please do tell. The default order seems to be backwards.
I am amazed to be a member of the blogspot .com . Thanks for the website

thank you very much you made me able to be on the website hurray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The player doesn’t play :O( Was eager to see it too!!
If you’re trying to create a banner photo that will fill the top of the screen for your header, try a great new free web app called Picnik at www.picnik.com.
I uploaded a picture from my computer and used the Resize option under “Edit” to set the size at 1100 x 170 and it fit the banner width perfectly, whether in IE or Firefox. Picnik also allows you to do all kinds of special effects on your photos. You can also upload pictures from Flickr, Picasa or Facebook.
i haven’t watched the video yet, but as soon as i’ve seen that feature added to blogger, i’ve tested it already. took me a while to choose what image to choose and how to present it and make it fit my blog (it is a philippine travel blog). it was also a lot of work to make the correct sizing on my image so it would perfectly fit my header. after a long work, i’ve finally done it without using any references or asking for anyone’s help and it really paid off. it felt so good after i’ve made the modifications in my blog’s header. can someone check it and tell me about my header? i’m not sure if i should change the image though. i will watch the tutorial clip later.

Hey Ryanne
I’ve been trying to get an image up there and it works when I put an avatar sze (100×100) up there, but then I want a bigger picture and when I do try to upload it, it takes forever. That yellow caution signs just keeps running and running and running. And then when I give the link for the picture, it says my header is saved, but when I view my profile, it’s not there.
What am I doing wrong? I’m in major need of help!!

Great tutorial, was wondering what video screen capture software you use, the video really is crystal clear!
I can’t get my picture off my computer uploaded. Is there a max size? I want to do a panoramic I have… It just sits in the upload spinning thing…and nothing else happens…
Any suggestions?
I throught your video was great! Thank you.
This is a great tutorial. Thank you! It gave us an idea for our Blog on Books website. We want people to come up with a header image for our site. A stack of books, or people reading, whatever you want. If you have a good shot you’d like us to use, send it to info@blogonbooks.com and we will take a look and perhaps give it a shot! Cheers.
great tutorial! you’re the best…can’t wait to try it:)

Ryanne,
I have been trying to add images with my mac, and none seem to load up properly. During the upload, the “loading” icon just keeps spinning and spinning, and my picture never appears, nor does it land on the page. The process seems to work just fine with a PC, but as the mac is otherwise easier to use, I would rather stick with that.
Any light you could shed on this connundrum would be a great help. Until then, I will just keep pushing along. Thank you.
Thanks for the info. It was very easy to follow and now I can import pix as I want.
As per a couple of previous posts. Use a program like the free Irfanview to size your image so it is in the 650-690 pixel width. At least that works with the “scribe” template.
Irvanview can be used to generate a new blank image. Pick a fill or color that works with your blog. Open Irfanview in a second window and load any image you want in the header image. Use edit-copy and then paste it into a location you have marked on the blank image. Then use Irfanview to add the text you want.
Once done, insert image as per instructions provided. Save, etc.
Then edit that element which will allow the options to use the image as a background image or to replace the text. Then save again.
In the website above is a temporary test I set up for a friend who my wife says “should not be allowed to drive on the information highway”.
Hi Ryanne, just wanted to let you know I use the video on http://bloggermods.blogspot.com according to the creative commons license, with - of course - a link back here.
It’s on this page

But now it simply disseapears after a few minutes, only the title of the blog remainning. Thanks for your help.
