1 How To Install And Setup WordPress

Verdi July 5th, 2007

This is our first screencast for the Show In A Box project. “What’s that,” you ask? Show In A Box is a collection of tools designed to turn WordPress into the “Ultimate Videoblogging Platform.” Now, don’t worry, we’re not dropping Blogger - we love Blogger. Show In A Box (and WordPress) is more powerful than Blogger but that comes at a price - a few dollars for a domain and webhosting and a lot more setup and configuration. So this first screencast just details setting up a mySQL database, installing WordPress, and doing it’s initial configuration. This doesn’t include adding any of the special Show In A Box stuff that we’ve built - it just gets you WordPress installed. The rest will come later.

I wish this had been available in Dec 2005! I spent 8 hours getting Wordpress onto Go Daddy the right way. On my first attempt, using Transmit for FTP I sat there for an hour before I realized everything on my computer was getting uploaded. Thanks for these tutorials, great for newbies and great refreshers.

On a Windows box, the text editor is called Notepad, not Wordpad (Wordpad is a rich text editor). But sometimes Notepad has trouble with certain characters depending on the text file’s character encoding. I would recommend Windows users go nab the free text editor Notepad++ from http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/download.php - it just works, no worries.

How did you capture full motion video of your computer screen on this video? When I need to do this, I use a composite video output on the back of my laptop. Your capture not only seems to have better resolution than mine, but you have the ability to zoom in on a segment of your screen. I’m impressed.

    Thanks!

Is this video already in dotsub? This would be really useful for a project we´re doing in Medellín Colombia if we could subtitle it in Spanish.

    Thanks!

I’m a newbie to most of this - and I’m with you - just signed up for 1&1 and I’m really looking forward to further installments. Thanks for the great instructions, and I hope I can get a vlog up and running on Wordpress sometime soon. I tried it on Moveable Type but got too confused without your style of clear instructions.
    Thanks

Thanks for such a superb tutorial. I wish I had done this to Creatively Impulsive a long long time ago.

One question tho, because it’s not working right for me yet. (I’m hosting from GoDaddy if that means anything)

So, I did everything step by step, twice even, and when you go to creativelyimpulsive.com it’s directed to a blank index. When you go to creativelyimpulsive.com/vlog it shows word press but says “error” and doesn’t display any posts. I can see that my index php is right (just what the tutorial displays). I know my options in wordpress are linked right. Is this something on GoDaddy’s side? (which they have not been much help at all) Ever heard of this happening?

Thanks a lot. I hope you can help me shine some light on my delima so I can get CreativelyImpulsive back up and running again.

    Thanks!
    Dez

I was wondering if you have a video blog on the Xact HD1.

Unfortunately in low or regular light indoors, My view finder is black and can not see anything.
Outside is fine. I just seem to have an issue with interior video. Is there anything for it.
Also, great vlog on the waterproof xacti, will you have another vlog on the latest hd xacti as well and the point out the issues with low light shooting
    Thank you,
    Phil

Hey guys, great job in sharing what can be a little “geeky + intimidating” to folks.

Another method that can help beginners is to perform a 1-click install of Wordpress using “Fantastico” in most cPanel hosting company’s services. However, some host companies may not have the most current up to date version.

I personally use the method you suggest which is to manually upload the files, create the database and install, as I benefit from most control that way.

By the way, I have 15 free videos available at WordpressTutorials.com (‘Contribution’ link in the footer navigation) that may help your audience here too.

Once again, love what you do here - and hope to connect live with the both of you in the near future ;-)

Good video tutorial used as a reference, just wondering on how you would make the blog match your site?
