Economic crisis and globalization are putting unprecedented pressure on the lives of people in Colombia. Ten percent of the population have emigrated, many to the United States. Maria Gomez, a Colombian resident of New York City, has begun a video documentary project interviewing other Colombian people affected by this period of social upheaval and change.
Maria, who is trained in ethnographic data collection for anthropological research, has already interviewed many in the Colombian immigrant community of New York. She needs financial backing for a 4 month trip through Colombia gathering the stories of those still waiting to make the journey North.
This is the new project over at Have Money Will Vlog. Maria’s project is another great example of how videoblogging can attempt to bridge the gap between cultures. We fully support this project and hope you will too by going over there and throwing her a dime!

We recently met Tanja and Oscar from Freshtopia at the Off The Grid Meetup in Montana. They live in Oakland, CA and produce a kick ass videoblog about raw foods and the new green movement happening throughout the world. Jay and I love their vlog and have been inspired to start eating more raw foods because of it. Check out some rad episodes: Chocolate Part 1 and Part 2 and a visit to a Cooperative Garden in Oakland.

Boy it’s been a slow summer over here at Freevlog! We really are cooking some new stuff up though. One thing we’ve been continuing to put a lot of time into is Have Money Will Vlog. It’s a site that helps to raise money for interesting videoblogging projects. The lastest project we’re working on is Ashley Hodson’s Sustainable Route (yes that’s Ryanne’s sister - she’s also a videoblogger). Ashley’s project is a four month road trip around the U.S. visting average people like ourselves who are working with their communities to define and work towards sustainability. And of course she’s going to document the whole thing, making a video for each place she visits. Oh, and if you of a place she should visit, you can add it the suggestion page.
So head on over to Have Money Will Vlog, check out the project and donate a few bucks. We’re already more than half way towards our goal of $2000.

We really should have done a “Kick-Ass” video interview with Daniel Liss of pouringdown.tv but we didn’t. That’s okay, you can just go watch these videos and you’ll be certain to be inspired: Begin Here, Theory: Practice, and Decision Machine. So even though we didn’t get to do that interview, we’re posting about him now because we’re featuring him on another one of projects - Have Money Will Vlog. We want to help fund a game between Daniel and you. We, the community, will raise money AND tell him how to use it. Daniel is willing to take a risk and make videos in any location and at the direction of his five filters. The five filters are a group that Daniel selected to take the input and ideas that we all submit on the Seven Maps Wiki and come up with challenges for him.
So during the month of July we’ll be brainstorming ideas for the project and working to raise $2000 to fund it. Then in August, Daniel will go off to make seven videos with the community guiding him via the five filters. This is going to be a KICK-ASS project. So read more about it on Have Money Will Vlog, subscribe to the Seven Maps videoblog, and donate a few bucks.

My apologies for posting this late. First, for those of you unfamiliar with Carp Caviar, let me explain a bit. Erik Nelson from Bottom Union created it in December last year, posting this first promo. Then he invited everyone to join in by making their own. In one post he describes it like this, “It’s a game, get it? But probably less like chess and more like pong.” So in this video I talk with Chris Weagel about an amazing and surreal Carp Caviar video that he made. Along the way, he talks about how he approaches the videos that he makes and about kind of collaboration that Carp Caviar has inspired.

Lac St. Clair is another of my all time favorite posts. From a production standpoint, it’s pretty straightforward - just a man with a camera. What makes it special, besides being very funny, is that it’s really very “Chris Weagel” and at the same time, if you live in the United States at least, it’s about something that everyone can see happening where they live.

Look for part 2 of my conversation with Chris on Monday.

Jay Dedman’s “Looking At Things” is our first Kick Ass Vlog post. I show this video to new videobloggers all the time because I think it’s such a great example of a concise, poetic and powerful piece. On top of that, it’s just a single-take with a simple voice over. This is an example of why I always say that authenticity and a good idea trump a big budget any day.

This video was a re-mix with a voice over by Shannon back when there were literally 5 people videoblogging. I loved this video the first time I saw it. I love it now.

I’ll just quote Ryanne quoting the video - “… there are a few of use who quote it constantly. Such truth. So many people feel this way.
‘i hate it
i hate it
i hate it….
i hate it.
i’ll die because they’ll ask me a question and i wont know the answer.’
Yup. Me too dude.”

Chuck Olsen gives us a real world example of some of the things that don’t work about our current copyright laws. I wish big media companies would hurry up and figure this out.

Hey! After 3 months off, Classic Videoblogs is back! So let’s get to it with a post by Josh Leo. Some of us had been watching Josh’s videoblogs for a few weeks already when he made this. After this post everyone was watching.

Okay this is my daughter Dylan’s first video and I love it just for that reason. I’m calling it a classic though because it was the first instant viral videoblog and it landed Dylan on ABC news. If your interested you can also watch my video about what happened, here: http://michaelverdi.com/index.php/2005/01/01/the-youngest-videoblogger-in-the-world/

I love when someone has a birthday and they give people presents. That’s what this videoblog is, a little present from Zadi to all of us. Thanks Zadi!

I saw this while Jay, Josh and I were at the TED conference in California. We were, and still are, just trying to figure out just what the heck all of this is, what all of this means. This was a great breaking point that Michael expressed. You can see the thread of videos that this post spawned HERE. A much needed collaboration in the community.
